WORD ON EARTHQUAKES & TSUNAMI WARNINGS: Today’s tsunami warning in Phuket was lifted about 8pm, after the threat of large tsunami had passed.
Police allowed traffic to enter Patong again after closing off the roads to inbound traffic when the tsunami warning was issued in the afternoon.
Most businesses and entertainment venues in Patong shut up shop immediately after the earthquake and tsunami warning and some will remain closed for tonight.
No injuries or damage has been reported in the immediate vicinity of the earthquake, which some experts said behaved in a different way to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. That tsunami was caused by a vertical shift along the fault line but today’s earthquake was a horizontal shift.
